Healing Hearts: Mercy Patient Reflects on Lifesaving Surgery

February 13, 2017

Albert Freeman loves his heart pillow. It's a symbol not only of his newfound strength, but of the battles he's fought to keep his heart healthy.

The Vietnam War veteran says he "would've been dead in two months" had he not seen his Mercy doctor. He quickly underwent three bypasses and had an aorta replaced. Soon after, he was sent home with a heart pillow.

For decades, volunteers at Mercy Hospital Springfield have hand-stitched thousands of heart pillows for patients who've undergone heart surgery. It's an effort to remind them to be gentle going forward.

Mercy cardiologist and surgeon, Dr. Sirish Parvathaneni, tells KRBK News why the pillows are so importmant, as part of a Heart Month feature. Click here to watch.
