It’s a medical topic few want to discuss, but the United Ostomy Association of America estimates that more than 750,000 Americans are living with an ostomy, and more than 130,000 new life-saving ostomy surgeries occur in America each year. To better serve these patients, Mercy recently opened an Outpatient Ostomy Clinic - one of only two hospital-based outpatient ostomy clinics in the St. Louis area - at its Studt Avenue location, part of Mercy Hyperbarics and Wound Care.
An ostomy is a surgical procedure used to create a stoma, or an opening in the abdominal wall, that allows the passage of digested food or urine. Ostomies may be permanent or temporary, depending on the section of organ removed and the patient’s medical status. People with ostomies can live full and active lives.
The clinic offers education and support services aimed at improving the quality of life for patient who have had or are going to have ostomy surgery. The goal is to help prepare patients to adapt to life after ostomy surgery and return to their normal activities as soon as possible. The Mercy Outpatient Ostomy Clinic is staffed by certified ostomy care nurses, specially trained in the care and management of ostomies, and provides a full range of services for these patients.
The Mercy Outpatient Ostomy Clinic is located at 11700 Studt Ave., in Creve Coeur, Missouri. It's open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday-Friday.
