Every February, hundreds of women wear red in Ada. For Barbara Miller, Marketing Planning Director at Mercy, raising awareness about heart disease in Ada is personal.
“Ada is my hometown,” said Miller. My family and friends are here. I’m thankful to be a part of this event that raises awareness about heart disease and provides needed resources to the community.”
Because of this, Miller and Shondra McCage, Diabetes Care Center Program Manager at the Chickasaw Nation Department of Health, a team from Mercy Hospital Ada, the Oklahoma Heart Hospital and the Chickasaw Nation are working to create awareness of their local “Wear Red for Women” event. The luncheon promotes education about heart disease and raises money to place automated defibrillators (AEDs) in the community.
The luncheon features a heart-healthy meal, red purse silent auction and presentation regarding women’s heart health. An estimated 200 women typically attend the Wear Red for Women Luncheon, helping to raise funds through ticket sales and the silent purse auction.
“Together we can make a difference,” said Shondra McCage, Diabetes Care Center Program Manager at the Chickasaw Nation Department of Health. “I am humbled to take part in an event such as this that impacts so many women.”
The Wear Red for Women Luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8 at the Chickasaw Nation Community Center, 700 N. Mississippi in Ada. Tickets are $25 per person.
