Doctors often advise their patients to start healthy habits, but Dr. Madhura Joag, the newest internal medicine physician in Rolla, wants to help you customize your plan.
“I like working with people’s personalities and lifestyle to help them reach their goals,” she said.
She practices what she prescribes, finding time for both exercise and activities that reduce stress and bring her joy. “I’m currently a big fan of my Peloton bike,” she said. “I also enjoy watercolor painting and I’m in constant search of new classes to help me grow my skills. And I have two pugs that I absolutely adore.”
Dr. Joag grew up in a small town in India, about eight hours’ drive from Mumbai. She says she feels right at home in Rolla. “I like that it’s a small town with a diverse population, due in part to the university here. It can be challenging for people in rural areas to have good access to health care, and I’m so glad I get to work here.”
The daughter of two physicians, Dr. Joag has been around medicine her entire life, but she wasn’t always sure it was the path she would take. “As a child, I was intimidated by my parents’ busy schedules, but as I grew up I knew I wanted to follow in their footsteps.” Having a husband who’s also a physician helps, too, as they both understand the hours required to care for patients.
Dr. Joag began her education in India, then worked for three years as a research fellow in Miami, did an intern year in Massachusetts and completed her residency in internal medicine at Mercy Hospital St. Louis.
