Mercy Hospital Jefferson received an A grade in the spring 2021 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grades, a national distinction recognizing Mercy Jefferson’s achievements protecting patients from errors, injuries, accidents and infections.
Mercy Jefferson earned its eighth A in the last nine grading periods. Of 2,700 hospitals across the country, only 33% received an A grade and only 15 hospitals in Missouri including Mercy Hospital Jefferson, Merc Hospital St. Louis and Mercy Hospital Washington.
The Leapfrog Group is an independent national watchdog organization committed to health care quality and safety. Every six months, Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grade assigns an A-F letter grade to all general hospitals across the country. It is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospitals’ prevention of medical errors and other harms to patients in their care.
“This honor is a testament to the patient-first focus of all our co-workers,” said Eric Ammons, president of Mercy Hospital Jefferson. “They truly care for the well-being of our entire community and show it through the way they put safety first for each and every patient who needs our care.”
“An A safety grade is an elite designation that your community should be proud of,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “The past year has been extraordinarily difficult for hospitals, but those achieving an A grade show us it is possible to keep a laser focus on patients and their safety, no matter what it takes.”
Developed under the guidance of a national expert panel, Leapfrog safety grades use up to 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign ratings to more than 2,700 U.S. acute-care hospitals twice each year. The methodology is peer-reviewed and fully transparent, and results are free to the public.
Mercy Jefferson’s other recent awards include being named a 2021 Best Maternity Hospital by Newsweek and the Leapfrog Group, one of only 217 hospitals in the country to earn that honor, and being rated a four-star hospital by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).
