The new year had just begun when Nova Finley was born at 12:18 a.m. Not only was Nova the first girl born at Mercy in 2025, she was the first baby born in Springfield.
Nova’s parents, Malachi Finley and Hailey Loubey were eager to welcome their new daughter who weighed 6 pounds, 10 ounces.
Not long after Nova was born, Mercy welcomed baby boy Waylon Hobbs to the world a little after 4 a.m. Waylon is Nathan and Katessa Hobbs’ second child. He weighed 8 pounds, 9 ounces and isn’t the only family member to be born around a holiday. His older brother was born a few days before Christmas, which means the Hobbs family will now have a lot to celebrate between Christmas and New Years.
To celebrate Nova and Waylon as the first baby girl and boy of the year, the Mercy nurses gifted the families with baskets of presents including homemade blankets. This is an annual tradition for the Springfield team, which has seen an increase in the number of babies being delivered at the hospital.
When 2024 came to a close, Mercy had delivered 3,152 babies. "We welcomed 296 newborns in December alone,” said Jennifer Murray, director of nursing, women’s and children’s services and behavioral health. “We know our team of doctors, nurses and midwives is incredibly talented. Their dedication to our patients as they go through every step of their pregnancy journey is why we are consistently named a top hospital for maternity care.”
