Asthma is a lung disease that can be life-threatening. It causes breathing problems which are called attacks, or episodes, of asthma.

People with asthma may have the following symptoms:

  • Coughing during or after exercise
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing sounds when breathing
  • Tightness in the chest

The more you know about asthma, the better you can control it. You can learn to identify and avoid the things that trigger an attack. People with asthma can also learn about medications and other ways to control asthma.
