We’re pleased to announce that St. Anthony's Medical Center Cardiac Rehab joined Mercy Clinic effective October 1, 2018. This is an exciting time for our organizations and for health care in the St. Louis area. All participating St. Anthony’s providers, co-workers and office locations will be integrated into Mercy to provide expanded services and better coordination of your care and wellness.

For patients who’ve had a heart attack or heart surgery to open narrowed valves, cardiac rehabilitation may be recommended. Cardiac rehabilitation can help return patients to a normal, healthy lifestyle.

Our cardiac rehabilitation program team includes registered nurses, exercise physiologists and respiratory therapists, and is under physician supervision. Mercy’s cardiac rehabilitation program is accredited by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation.

Three Phases of Cardiac Rehab:

  • Phase I begins in the hospital with low-level exercise and education about what activity you can do safely. This might include getting up and walking around your room or down the hallway with your physical therapist.
  • Phase II lasts 12 weeks and begins four weeks after going home. Your doctor will refer you to this outpatient program and stay in touch with your rehab team for progress updates. Health insurance usually covers this phase.
  • Phase III is an ongoing, supervised exercise program in the cardiopulmonary gym. You’ll be supervised, but won’t be monitored as closely as before. Whether you participate in the gym, or have a home exercise program designed for you, you’ll pay for this phase as you would a regular gym exercise program.

Education

Our team will provide information about coronary artery disease and ways you can reduce your risk of further heart-related problems. You and your family will learn about your medications, how to control your high blood pressure and diabetes, how to cope with stress, how to stop smoking and how to eat heart-healthy foods.

Emotional Support

You’ll benefit from the emotional support of the staff and other heart patients with similar experiences.

Why participate?

Cardiac rehabilitation helps you recover in a safe and monitored environment, and makes you an active partner in the recovery process by putting you in charge of your heart-healthy lifestyle.

Also, your progress is supervised to watch for complications that might need medical treatment.

What heart conditions qualify you for cardiac rehab?

  • Heart attack
  • Chest pains (angina pectoris)
  • Coronary artery bypass graft
  • Balloon angioplasty
  • Heart transplant
  • Implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD)
