What is Surgical Weight Loss?

If you struggle with obesity and haven’t been able to lose weight by diet and exercise, you may want to consider bariatric surgical weight loss.  Bariatric surgery falls into two categories - restrictive, which reduces the stomach's size and capacity and malabsorption, which reduces the stomach’s ability to absorb calories. Surgical weight loss may also provide significant health benefits and allow you to:

  • Feel better, breath better, move better and have more energy
  • Reduce your cholesterol levels
  • Improve or resolve type 2 diabetes
  • Decrease your risk of heart disease, stroke, fatty liver disease, osteoarthritis and gastroesophageal reflux

Am I Eligible for Bariatric Surgery?

For weight loss surgery to be a viable option, patients must meet the following criteria:

You're over the age of 18 and 100 pounds or more over your ideal weight and have one of the following conditions:

  1. A body mass index (BMI) between 35 and 40, along with
    • Diabetes
    • Sleep Apnea
    • High Blood Pressure
    • Your weight is causing health problems
  2. Or have a BMI of 40 or more and none of the above health conditions

Disclaimer: Surgery may be associated with its own set of problems, such as infection, poor wound healing, and rarely even death. Therefore, you and your surgeon should carefully discuss the risks of your current health condition compared to the risks and benefits of surgery.
