Preparing For Your First Visit

The specialists at Mercy Clinic Neurology’s Headache Clinic strive to exceed your expectations in caring for your specific headache condition. In order for us to do this will, it does require background information so that we can pinpoint an accurate diagnosis, and formulate a treatment plan individualized to your needs. For your first appointment, we set aside a sufficient amount of time to cover all of the necessary bases, but starting on time is essential. As such, we require that all patients have thoroughly completed their new patient forms prior to their arrival. We also encourage you to bring loved ones or a personal support team to your appointment. This lets them learn about your treatment plan and how they may be able to help.

What Should You Expect at Your First Appointment?

Your initial visit to the Headache Clinic will be a diagnostic and treatment experience, aimed at comprehensive care. During this appointment you will be asked specific questions about your headache condition. Some things to note before your appointment:

  • We collect a complete medical history. We will provide you with our new patient forms prior to the appointment. We do ask that you take adequate time to thoughtfully complete these forms as it improves our ability to effectively care for you. You may want to involve your family in this process by asking them about their observations of your headaches. This conversation may help you identify some additional headache triggers.
  • Some tests previously performed by referring physicians may need to be repeated. Please be patient through the testing process. It takes time - but it’s worth it! Please bring with you any prior testing that has been completed.
  • You will be asked to keep a daily headache calendar.
  • Your headache specialist will recommend either a series of outpatient treatments, infusion therapy or procedural interventions to get your headaches under control. Migraine treatment is a marathon, not a sprint, so please be patient with this process.

Recommended Treatment Plans

Based on the total evaluation, the clinic physician will create an individualized, multidisciplinary treatment regimen that may include:

  • Medical therapies: Your clinic physician will suggest a program of specific therapeutic agents. Patient response is closely monitored during this time to evaluate efficacy and minimize side effects.
  • Lifestyle modifications: You will be instructed in the areas of diet, recreation, sleep patterns and other habits that can be linked to headaches.
  • Alternative treatments: Your medical and lifestyle treatments are augmented with alternative approaches that may include nerve blocks, massage therapy, BOTOX® injections, infusion treatment and psychological intervention.
