When it comes to debilitating headaches and migraines, Mercy neurologists understand your frustrations – missing quality time with loved ones, struggling to focus at work, and enduring a history of unsuccessful treatments and unmanageable symptoms. Our headache specialists are board certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and hold professional memberships with the American Headache Society, the International Headache Society and the National Headache Foundation. We will work with you to create a complete, personalized treatment plan that will help you feel listened to, informed and confident about your ability to manage pain. Mercy doctors care, and the pain you’re experiencing matters to us.

What to Expect

Before your first appointment, we will provide you with new patient paperwork. We ask that you thoughtfully complete these forms, as it improves our ability to effectively care for you. You may want to involve your family by asking them to share their observations of your headaches. This conversation may help identify additional headache triggers.

Please keep in mind, if you’ve had testing performed in the past, it may need to be repeated. If you have results from previous testing, please bring them with you. During your first visit to the clinic, your doctor will ask specific questions about your headache history. You will also be asked to keep a daily headache calendar.

Based on the total evaluation, the your neurologist will create an individualized, multi-disciplinary treatment regimen that may include:

  • Medical therapies. Your neurologist will recommend a program of specific therapeutic agents. Patient response is closely monitored during this time to evaluate effectiveness and minimize side effects.
  • Lifestyle modifications. We will provide education on diet, recreation, sleep patterns and other habits that can be linked to headaches.
  • Alternative treatments: Your medical and lifestyle treatments are complemented by alternative approaches that may include nerve blocks, massage therapy, BOTOX® injections, infusion treatment and psychological intervention.
