Do you experience inflammation in your joints that causes pain and stiffness in the muscles of your neck, shoulders or hips? If so, you may have polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR). Some people with PMR, like those who leave their condition untreated, can develop chronic fatigue or a more dangerous condition called giant cell arteritis (GCA). GCA affects the arteries carrying blood to the head and can lead to blindness or mini-strokes.
Both PMR and GCA are treatable with medication, but both take long-term monitoring from a specialist. Your Mercy rheumatologist, along with your primary care doctor and rest of the integrated care team, will work closely with you to reduce your pain and keep the condition from returning – so you can get the most out of life.
