The Internal Medicine Residency Program is a three-year primary care experience designed to train skilled, well-rounded physicians within a community hospital setting. The program offers a comprehensive didactic curriculum as well as training in a variety of ambulatory care settings. Residents who complete our program have many opportunities to practice general internal medicine or to continue on with a subspecialty fellowship. Our residents perform well on the ABIM Certifying Exam. During the past three years, 95% of our residents passed the ABIM certifying exam the first time they sat for it.

Undergraduate electives also available for junior or senior medical students including a sub-internship on general medicine, cardiology (coronary care unit and/or consult service), endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious diseases, neurology, nephrology, pulmonary diseases, hematology/oncology, allergy/immunology and rheumatology. For more information, contact the Chief Medical Resident at 314-251-6960.

Training Experience

Mercy Hospital St. Louis, a 1,166-bed, modern, well-equipped hospital, is a member of the Council of Teaching Hospitals. The Department of Medicine has 87 teaching faculty members in the various divisions of the department. Teaching is the primary focus of the Internal Medicine faculty. Teaching rounds occur daily and are conducted by members of the hospitalist staff who are skillful and enthusiastic teachers. The residency program also includes three full months of Coronary Care Unit and two months of ICU where similar teaching rounds occur. We have alternating inpatient and outpatient months and a robust community clinic.

"We therefore reshaped our curriculum in order to allow for education to be guided by chosen field priority"

Formal teaching conferences are held five days per week. Medical Grand Rounds are held weekly and are conducted by speakers from Mercy Hospital St. Louis as well as with visiting professors throughout the United States.

During the second 18 months of training, residents are asked to commit to a career priority and their schedule is tailored to meet those educational goals and objectives.

Working Hours/Patient Limits

Our residents follow ACGME guidelines regarding working hours and patient limits. Interns do not take call in the hospital and senior residents occasionally take call during inpatient months on the weekends. The rest of the nights are covered by a night float team. Our interns spend two months out of the year on the night float service. Our residents spend no more than 80 hours per week on patient care duties while on inpatient rotations and average at least one full day out of seven free of patient care responsibilities while on inpatient rotations.

Program Requirements: It is preferred that candidates have six months of U.S. clinical experience that is outside of an externship/observership. We will sponsor a J1 visa in our program. H1 is sponsored on an individual basis and you must inquire about that if you are invited for an interview. Interviews are conducted from November through January.
