Mercy Named 22nd Healthiest Workplace in the U.S.

January 23, 2014

Co-workers walked 123,000 miles last year,

one of many reasons Mercy was recognized

MIDWEST, U.S. (Jan. 22, 2014) – Mercy was just named one of the 2014 Healthiest 100 Workplaces in America, ranking No. 22 and rubbing shoulders with the likes of Baylor Health Care System, Vanderbilt University and Verizon Wireless.

Healthiest Employers, a leader in employee health analytics, took a year-long look at companies of all sizes, and from all regions and industries, and culled the Healthiest 100 that have successfully implemented practical, effective and ever improving corporate wellness strategies for creating a sustainably healthy workplace.

Mercy got the nod in part thanks to its Walk to Dublin program, which challenged co-workers to collectively walk 6,183 miles in a month (the distance to Dublin, Ireland, where Mercy was born). Co-workers walked 123,000 miles (a total of nearly 250 million steps). Mercy has also incorporated the following to step up wellness:

  • Mercy facilities throughout Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri and Oklahoma have either an on-staff wellness coordinator or designated wellness captain who is responsible for providing opportunities and implementing policies for healthier lifestyles.
  • Healthification, Mercy’s wellness program, is designed to encourage well-balanced, healthy lifestyles through nutrition, physical activity, emotional and spiritual wellness, and smoking cessation.
  • Mercy has created walking/jogging trails around Mercy campuses wherever possible and has incorporated a healthy design for all new buildings.
  • Mercy has organized support groups for weight management and healthy eating.

“We have more than 40,000 co-workers and many of the states where we serve lead the nation in obesity,” said Lynn Britton, president and CEO of Mercy. “Through a focus on healthy lifestyles, Mercy’s goal is to reverse the trend.”
