Mercy Clinic Pulmonary and Sleep Medicine in Washington, MO deals with diseases of the respiratory tract and respiratory diseases that can disrupt a patient's life. It is generally considered a branch of internal medicine, although it is closely related to intensive care or critical care medicine when dealing with patients requiring mechanical ventilation.

Sleep medicine is the specialty that deals with diseases disturbing restful sleep patterns. The Sleep Disorders Center is on the second floor of Mercy Medical Building South, where diagnostic sleep testing can be performed and interpreted.

Pulmonologists and critical care medicine provide consultative, diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients with illnesses that affect the lungs and breathing.

COPD Education Center

Mercy's COPD Education Center in Washington, Mo. is now open. The center is conveniently located at Mercy Medical Building South (by the Sleep Lab). One-hour appointments are available for patients with COPD Monday-Friday: 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. There is no cost for this service.

During the appointment, a respiratory therapist works with patients to:

  • Assess immunization status
  • Engage the patient in a smoking cessation program
  • Assess whether the patient is a candidate for pulmonary rehab, nutritional counseling or care management
  • CPAP equipment evaluation/education
  • Perform medication reconciliation and discuss the importance of adherence
  • Teach the correct use of inhalers and nebulizers
  • Complete manufacturer assistance forms if the patient has trouble affording medications
A referral to the COPD Education Center is required. Speak with your doctor to see if the center is a good fit for your health needs.
