1928
Southeast Missouri Hospital is dedicated on January 8, as thousands of people make their way to "hospital hill" despite the bitter winter cold. Some arrive on foot, while others come by automobile, streetcar and horse-drawn wagon. In all, about 5,000 people gather shoulder to shoulder for the dedication of the new hospital. The hospital's school of nursing also begins that year.
1957
A major addition doubles the hospital's capacity to about 153 beds. The expansion includes five operating rooms, dedicated orthopedic and urological operating rooms, a new obstetrics department and additional beds for medical-surgical and pediatric patients.
1979
The hospital establishes the first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) in downstate Missouri, expanding specialized care for the region's smallest and most vulnerable patients.
1981
Southeast Missouri Hospital completes its Regional Cancer Center next to the hospital on Lacey Street, bringing dedicated cancer services to the community.
1984
The hospital performs its first open-heart surgery, marking a significant expansion of advanced heart care in southeast Missouri.
1986
An outpatient laboratory and pre-admitting facility opens at Doctors' Park, becoming Southeast Missouri Hospital's first off-campus location.
1993
The Missouri State Board of Nursing approves the Southeast Missouri Hospital School of Nursing's expansion of its program with an LPN-to-RN pathway. The new pathway begins with the Fall 1994 class.
1996
The Southeast Joint Replacement Center opens, providing specialized care for patients undergoing hip, knee and shoulder replacement surgery and helping them return to their daily activities.
2001
Southeast Regional Heart Center and Cape Girardeau's Cardiac and Vascular Surgeons introduce endovascular triple-A repair, a minimally invasive treatment for abdominal aortic aneurysms.
This same year, Southeast becomes the first hospital in the region to offer hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
2004
HealthPoint Plaza opens as a medically integrated fitness and rehabilitation facility, expanding resources for exercise, recovery and rehabilitation.
2011
Southeast Cancer Center opens as part of the West Campus. At the time, the West Campus represents the largest construction project in the hospital's history.
2019
SoutheastHEALTH opens a new 11,652-square-foot primary care clinic in Jackson. The clinic includes 10 exam rooms, a procedure room, x-ray, ultrasound and lab services, and a retail pharmacy with a drive-through.
2023
SoutheastHEALTH opens the 70,000-square-foot Center for Integrated Health Services at 650 S. Mount Auburn Road in Cape Girardeau. The center brings orthopedic and sports medicine, women's health and breast health services together in one location. It includes specialized treatment, exam, procedure, ultrasound, x-ray and mammography rooms, along with lab services, physical therapy and advanced breast imaging. The center also creates up to 100 new jobs.
2024
SoutheastHEALTH joins Mercy, and Southeast Hospital becomes Mercy Hospital Southeast, continuing a tradition of serving southeast Missouri that began nearly a century earlier.
