What Is an Ostomy?

An ostomy is a surgical procedure used to create a stoma, which is an opening in the abdominal wall that allows for the passage of digested food or urine. The United Ostomy Association of America estimates that more than 750,000 Americans are living with an ostomy and more than 130,000 new life-saving ostomy surgeries occur each year.

Ostomies may be permanent or temporary, depending on the section of organ removed and a patient’s medical status. With the appropriate care and support in place, people with ostomies can live full and active lives.

Types of Ostomies

The three most common types of ostomies are:

• Colostomy – brings a portion of the large colon to the surface of the skin, usually on the left side of the abdomen
• Ileostomy – brings a portion of the small intestine to the surface of the skin, usually on the right side of the abdomen
• Urostomy (ileal or colonic conduit) – removes the bladder and uses a small piece of intestine to form a tube or tunnel in the abdomen

If you’ve had or are going to have ostomy surgery, our outpatient ostomy services offer education and support to help you improve your quality of life. Our goal is to help you adapt to life with your ostomy and get back to normal activities as soon as possible.

Our clinic is run by certified ostomy care nurses and other caregivers specially trained in ostomy care and management. We provide a full range of services for patients with ostomies as well as fistula wound management. 

Preoperative Services

We offer a range of services to help you before your procedure, including:

• Preoperative education and counseling to answer any questions you have about living with a stoma, dietary concerns and knowing when to return to work and other activities
• Preoperative abdomen assessments to determine the best location for your surgeon to create the stoma
• Close coordination and communication between your ostomy nurse and specialty surgeon to ensure the best possible outcome
• Introduction to different types and styles of pouches and/or pouching systems
