Compassionate Behavioral Health for Expectant & New Mothers

Pregnancy and parenthood are life-changing experiences, and you’re likely to feel a wide range of emotions as you adjust. Some of these feelings are normal and temporary, but others may become intense and need medical care.

Mercy has compassionate caregivers who can evaluate, diagnose and treat your perinatal behavioral health condition, so you can enjoy pregnancy and life with your little one to the fullest.

What Is Perinatal Behavioral Health?

Perinatal behavioral health focuses on the unique mental health challenges that can affect women at any time during pregnancy and up to a year after delivery (the perinatal period). You might notice symptoms of anxiety, depression or other mood changes.

Contact your OB/GYN or health care provider right away if you experience:

  • Intense sadness and crying most of the day on most days
  • Racing thoughts or unusual amounts of energy
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Strong feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Extreme restlessness or irritability
  • Difficulty remembering things, focusing or functioning
  • Trouble making decisions
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Unusual changes in appetite
  • Physical symptoms of unknown cause (body aches, chest pains or hyperventilation)

If you’re experiencing these symptoms, you may be referred for a perinatal behavioral health evaluation or other care.
