At Mercy, we believe that patients at the end of their lives should be made as comfortable as possible. That's why we create spaces designed to preserve their dignity and overall quality of life while inviting family and loved ones to be present.
Since opening on May 14,1999, we've cared for over 5,000 patients at the Fern & Russell F. de Greeff Hospice House on the campus of Mercy Hospital South.

What makes the Hospice House special?
Hospice Care at the de Greeff Hospice House embraces all aspects of life – physical, spiritual and emotional. We provide services with a compassionate care team consisting of:
- A medical director who is American board-certified in hospice and palliative medicine
- Registered nurses who are certified in hospice and palliative care
- Licensed clinical social workers
- A chaplain who is trained in clinical pastoral care
- Certified nurse aides
- Hospice-trained volunteers
What services does the Hospice House provide?
- Expertise in end-of-life medical care
- Emotional and spiritual support
- Inpatient hospice for patients requiring short term symptom management
- Bereavement counseling
- Financial counseling and aid, if necessary
Who can receive end-of-life care at the Hospice House?
- Male and female patients 18 years of age and older
- Patients diagnosed with a terminal illness, including cancer, heart disease, end-stage dementia and end-stage ALS
- Patients from all socioeconomic backgrounds
- Patients from the St. Louis metro area, including surrounding counties and IL
What accommodations does the de Greeff Hospice House offer?
- Calming setting including quiet patios, landscaped grounds and walking paths
- 14 single-bedroom suites with family member accommodations
- No visiting hour restrictions
- Fully equipped family kitchen
- Two dining rooms for meals, celebrations or special gatherings
- Open family rooms and sitting areas
- Chapel for private meditation or scheduled worship services
- Bereavement Library
What qualifies someone for Hospice Care at de Greeff Hospice House?
- Physician referral
- RN evaluations
- Medical Director approval
- Terminal prognosis of six months or less
- Lack of a primary caregiver and/or resources to hire outside help
- Inability to remain at home due to intensification of symptoms
