Specialized Care for Every Type of Hernia

A hernia occurs when a weak spot in the body, often in the abdomen or groin, allows a piece of tissue to protrude outward. The resulting bulge can be painful and usually won’t go away on its own.

Mercy’s general surgeons offer specialized care for all types and stages of hernias, including the most complex.

Why Choose Mercy for Hernia Repair?

  • Experience. Our surgical team has deep expertise, and some clinics are recognized as Centers of Excellence in Hernia Surgery. Our team members share best practices nationally and hold leadership roles in the American Society of Gastroenterology.
  • Innovative treatments. We use the latest surgical advancements to achieve long-lasting results, even for the most complicated hernias.
  • Comprehensive care. We take a team approach to provide the best outcomes, collaborating with internists, plastic surgeons, gastroenterologists, orthopedic surgeons, and wound and pain management specialists.
  • Personalized care plans. We tailor treatment to your unique needs and hernia type and to the extent of surgery required. We also prepare you for what to expect before, during and after surgery.

Types of Hernia Repairs

  • Suture repair. Minor hernias are sometimes repaired using only stitches. Surgical mesh may also be used for extra support.
  • Minimally Invasive (Laparoscopic or robotic-assisted) repair. Several tiny incisions are made in the abdomen, and small instruments guided by a camera are used to repair the hernia. These minimally invasive techniques result in less pain, scarring and downtime.
  • Open surgery. Traditional surgery may be needed to repair some hernias.  More complex hernias can involve extensive muscle and tissue reconstruction to restore function and prevent another hernia.

Many hernia surgeries are outpatient, allowing you to return home the same day. For more complex hernia repairs, you may need to stay in the hospital a night or two. Your surgeon and care team will provide detailed instructions for self-care at home after hernia surgery.

Using Mesh to Repair Hernias

Surgical mesh provides extra support to help keep hernias from coming back. Mesh also reduces tension on your incision, resulting in less pain. Mercy surgeons are highly experienced in using mesh to provide long-term hernia relief.

Types of Hernias We Treat

We treat all types and stages of hernias, including:

  • Epigastric hernia, which occurs in the abdominal wall above the belly button and below the rib cage
  • Femoral hernia, which develops in the groin area near the femoral artery
  • Hiatal hernia, which happens when part of your stomach bulges up through your diaphragm
  • Incisional hernia, which develops in surgical incisions, especially down the middle of the stomach
  • Inguinal hernia, which occurs when internal tissue, such as the small or large intestine, juts out through the groin muscle
  • Umbilical hernia, which appears near the navel, or belly button

Tissue Reconstruction

Our talented plastic surgeons perform traditional and minimally invasive surgical procedures to improve the appearance and function of reconstructed tissue, helping you return to an active lifestyle.
