Measles

Condition

Several confirmed measles cases in the St. Louis, Missouri area have created the potential for community exposure. If you think you or your child may have been exposed or are worried about symptoms, Mercy can help you figure out next steps — day or night.

What You Need to Know

Measles is a serious, highly contagious disease caused by a virus. The virus is spread easily through the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It can also be contracted through direct contact with an infected person’s nose or throat secretions.

Measles is very dangerous, especially for babies and immunocompromised adults. A large proportion of people who get measles will be hospitalized. One in five infected persons develops pneumonia, which could be fatal. In some cases, a brain infection may occur and result in swelling, brain damage or death.

Symptoms

Early measles symptoms include:

  • Moderate fever
  • Runny nose
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Red eyes

The following symptoms may appear after a few days:

  • High fever over 104° F
  • Blue/white spots inside the mouth
  • Red/brown rash beginning at the hairline and spreading down the body (usually appearing 14 days after exposure)

Vaccination/Immunity

Two doses of the MMR vaccine provides 97% lifetime protection against measles. If you’re over 18 and would like to receive one or both vaccine doses, you can schedule a virtual visit 24/7 to get your vaccination ordered. Care Now Navigator Visit

Vaccination offers the best protection against measles. Children should be vaccinated against measles at 12 to 15 months old and again at 4 to 6 years old. If your child needs the measles vaccine, call or message their primary care provider’s office to get scheduled. Find a Mercy Doctor or Physician | Mercy

Herd immunity happens when 95% of a community is fully vaccinated with two doses of the MMR vaccine. Herd immunity is crucial for preventing disease outbreaks in your community and protecting vulnerable populations who cannot receive vaccines.
