Frequently Asked Questions

In general, GLP-1 medicines may be an option if:

  • Your BMI is 30 or higher, or
  • Your BMI is 27 or higher and you have a weight-related health condition, such as high blood pressure or diabetes

Insurance plans may have different rules. Your Mercy provider can help determine if a GLP-1 is right for you.

BMI stands for body mass index. It uses your height and weight to estimate if your weight is in a healthy range. Your provider can help explain what your BMI means for your overall health.

Use our BMI calculator to find yours.

A compounded GLP-1 is a medicine made by a special pharmacy instead of a drug manufacturer. These medicines aren’t reviewed by the FDA for safety, quality or effectiveness. They may carry a higher risk of dosing mistakes, contamination or other safety concerns.

If you’re currently taking a compounded GLP-1, you can talk with a Care Now Navigator provider about the safest way to switch to an FDA-approved medication.

Common side effects may include:

  • Nausea
  • Upset stomach
  • Constipation
  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Heartburn or acid reflux

Serious side effects are rare but can happen. Talk to your provider if you have severe stomach pain, ongoing vomiting or other concerning symptoms.

Many people can reduce side effects by:

  • Starting with a low dose
  • Increasing the dose slowly as directed
  • Eating smaller meals
  • Avoiding greasy, fried or highly processed foods
  • Staying hydrated

If side effects don’t improve, your provider may adjust your dose.

No. GLP-1 medications aren’t recommended during pregnancy or while breastfeeding.

If you become pregnant while taking a GLP-1, contact your provider right away. They’ll help you decide what to do next.

For some people, GLP-1 medications may support weight loss and improve overall metabolic health, which can help improve fertility.

If you’re trying to become pregnant, talk with your provider about when to stop taking a GLP-1. These medications should be stopped before pregnancy.

Yes. Several other prescription medications may help with weight loss.

Your provider will review your health history, goals and insurance coverage to help find the best option for you.

Weight management is often a long-term journey. Many people need ongoing treatment to help maintain their results.

Your provider will work with you to create a plan that fits your health goals and needs.

No. Some weight loss medications are injections, while others are pills.

If you have Medicare and are interested in a GLP-1 medication for weight loss or weight management, you may be eligible through certain Medicare-covered conditions, such as diabetes or moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea. If you don't qualify through one of those conditions, you may still be eligible for the Medicare GLP-1 Bridge Program. Eligibility is based on factors such as your Medicare prescription drug coverage, BMI and health history. Not everyone will qualify, and coverage isn’t guaranteed. Your provider and pharmacy can help determine whether this program may be an option for you.
