The Emergency Department at Mercy Hospital Fort Smith is a Level III trauma center. While many hospital emergency rooms treat only minor injuries such as cuts and breaks, trauma centers provide a higher level of care.
Mercy Hospital Fort Smith’s emergency medicine fellowship offers four positions each academic year. During your fellowship, you’ll have 24-hour access to an in-house emergency physician, trauma surgeon and anesthesiologist, in addition to orthopedic surgeons and intensive care services. Fellows can also moonlight at any of Mercy’s four critical access hospitals.
Our ED and ICU recently completed a $186-million-dollar expansion, which increased the ED from 29 rooms to 50. As one of the busiest emergency departments in the state, we have roughly 80,000 visits each year.
Emergency Medicine Fellowship Curriculum
- 12 months of community emergency medicine
- Sim lab experience
- Cadaver lab experience
- EMS experience
Emergency Medicine Fellowship Prerequisites
- Have an unrestricted Arkansas license to practice medicine or be eligible for a physician-in-training permit (check the Arkansas medical board for requirements)
- Have graduated from an ACGME-accredited internal medicine or family medicine program (residents pending completion may still apply)
- Have successfully completed all USMLE/COMLEX steps before fellowship
- Have competitive USMLE/COMLEX board scores
- Be a graduate from an LCME-accredited medical school or hold a valid ECFMG certificate
- Have a passing score within three attempts on USMLE/COMLEX exams, completing all exams within seven years
- Have a graduation date within 10 years
