GME Hospice & Palliative Medicine Curriculum

Fellowship Rotations

Inpatient Palliative Care Consultation Service

  • 5 months
  • Fellows will work on our interdisciplinary consultation team with our active embedded services in our ICU’s, “step down” unit, oncology service and providing consultation services in the heart hospital, stroke service, burn unit and our ED which is a Level 1 trauma center.

Outpatient Palliative Care

  • 1/2 day per week for 6 months
  • Fellows will follow patients longitudinally in either our general outpatient clinic seeing both oncology and chronic disease patients and/or in our outpatient clinic embedded in the Pratt Cancer Center.

Home Hospice

  • 2.5 months
  • Fellows will participate in weekly IDT meetings, make home visits on hospice patients for symptom control and/or to assume their primary care and for recertification of the hospice benefit.

Long term Care

  • 1 month
  • Fellows will provide palliative care or hospice consultations for patients in selected skilled nursing facilities.

Pediatric Palliative Care

  • 1 month
  • Fellows will join the pediatric multidisciplinary team seeing patients in the NICU, the pediatric intensive care unit and will see outpatients in the Mercy Clinic Children’s Cancer and Hematology Center.

Elective Rotations and Scholarly Activity

  • 2.5 months
  • Fellows will select elective rotations according to their interests and may include oncology, pulmonary critical care, ethics, radiation oncology, cardiology, neurology, geriatrics  or another elective opportunity of their own choosing.
  • Fellows will have a required quality improvement, patient safety or scholarly research project. There is an opportunity to present clinical research at the annual Mercy Research Colloquium and we have an outstanding and supportive Institutional Review Board (IRB) to help our fellows with research projects.
