New Cancer Center to be Built on St. Anthony’s Campus

June 14, 2018

SOUTH ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Mo. – Mercy is preparing to break ground on its first major additions to expand and improve the care it provides to the St. Anthony’s community with the construction of a new on-campus cancer care center and construction of nine new Mercy Clinic primary care locations.

“When St. Anthony’s and Mercy officially joined together one year ago, and when we first announced the affiliation agreement 15 months ago, we promised to listen to our community to determine how we could best serve everyone,” said Mike McCurry, St. Anthony’s President and Mercy Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. “Part of what we learned was our community needs expanded access to primary care and would benefit from improved, comprehensive cancer care.”

The cancer care center will provide patients with all their diagnostic and treatment needs in one location with enhanced capabilities and the additions of oncology and surgical specialists. It will include a comprehensive breast center to continue providing breast cancer screening and navigation. St. Anthony’s also will continue to provide lung cancer screening and navigation.

“As part of the affiliation agreement, Mercy committed to invest significantly in St. Anthony’s facilities,” said Winthrop Reed, St. Anthony’s Chairman of the Board. “We are excited to move forward with this new cancer care center as the next step in fulfilling that promise.”

Mercy Clinic’s construction of nine new primary care locations over the next two years will provide new access to potentially tens of thousands of patients in the community. Those locations will be spread from south St. Louis County to Jefferson County and Monroe County, Illinois at an estimated cost of more than $20 million. The first new buildings are scheduled to open by winter 2018/19.

The first two locations will be in Barnhart at 1700 Old State Road M and in Hillsboro at 10450 Business 21. The other locations will be spread across south St. Louis County, Jefferson County and Monroe County, Ill.

St. Anthony’s is among the largest hospitals in the St. Louis metropolitan area, serving residents from nine Missouri and Illinois counties and the city of St. Louis. The Catholic, nonprofit medical center, located in south St. Louis County, operates a 767-bed comprehensive healthcare complex, a Level Two Trauma Center, and a Level One Stroke Center, as well as four urgent care facilities.
