Mercy South and the Mehlville Fire Protection District are launching a new EMS Transport Division to enhance patient care and transportation services.
This new initiative will provide dedicated transfer services, ensuring patients are transported safely and efficiently between medical facilities, including nursing homes. To support this program, Mehlville Fire has hired two dedicated crews consisting of experienced EMTs and paramedics who will focus solely on transfer operations.
Mehlville Fire has allocated an ambulance specifically for transport services, while Mercy South has provided a Sprinter ambulance for the division. This collaboration allows for seamless patient transitions between Mercy Hospital South, neighboring hospitals and care facilities, ensuring continuity of care and improved patient outcomes.

“This partnership with Mercy South aligns with our mission to provide the highest level of emergency medical services to the community,” said Chief Brian Hendricks, Fire Chief of Mehlville Fire Protection District. “By establishing a dedicated transport division, we can ensure that patients receive the care they need in a timely and professional manner.”
“Working alongside Mehlville Fire Protection District makes perfect sense for us and the entire South County community,” said Sean Hogan, President of Mercy South St. Louis Communities. “Our shared knowledge and experience allows us each to expand on the outstanding service each of our organizations is already providing in a way that improves the quality of care and makes the health care system more efficient for patients. Plus, for us, it helps us continue to live the legacy of the Sisters of Mercy by extending the care we provide outside our own facilities and into the community, just as the Sisters have always done.”
The EMS Transport Division will work closely with medical professionals at Mercy South to coordinate patient transfers, prioritizing safety, comfort and medical oversight throughout the process.
This is the second such partnership between Mehlville Fire and Mercy South. Mehlville Fire has dedicated two full-time community paramedics to treat patients in their home as part of Mercy's Hospital Care at Home program. Under Mercy's guidance, these community paramedics bring their experience in caring for patients in their home with Mercy's experience providing acute level inpatient care.
