When 126 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) nurses at Mercy Hospital St. Louis pooled their money to buy a lottery ticket, they had no idea how much of an impact their purchase would make.
From NBC Nightly News to Good Morning America, their story of winning $10,000 went "viral" the week after Thanksgiving. They decided that instead of each being about $56 richer, they'd use the money to help other Mercy co-workers who'd fallen on difficult times.
They presented checks to nurse Gretchen Post and neonatalogist Dr. Casey Orellana. Post's son died by suicide the previous month, and Orellana's husband was recently diagnosed with stage 4 sarcoma cancer.
