Ten in a Row! Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City Earns 10th A Grade from Safety Watchdog Leapfrog Group

May 10, 2022

Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City has received its tenth consecutive A in the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade for achievements in protecting patients from harm and errors in the hospital.

“What’s so special about this award is that we can’t apply or pay for this recognition,” said Jim Gebhart, community president of Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City. “It’s an independent, outside group that looks at data of how we provide care for our patients, and they have determined once again that our co-workers and physicians provide the safest care in the country. The kind of care patients get at Mercy in Oklahoma City is second to none but when you see it recognized ten grading periods in a row, it’s really humbling.”

The Leapfrog Group, an independent national watchdog organization, assigns letter grades to hospitals across the country based on more than 30 performance measures reflecting errors, injuries, accidents, infections and the protocols hospitals have in place to prevent harm to patients.

In Oklahoma, Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City was one of only 10 hospitals throughout the state to earn an A grade from Leapfrog in the Spring 2022 grades. Mercy Hospital Ada and Mercy Hospital Ardmore also received A grades.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program based exclusively on hospital prevention of medical errors and harm to patients. The grading system is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public at hospitalsafetygrade.org. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.

“As our health care system continues to feel the strain of the pandemic, I thank the workforce and leadership of Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City for sustained commitment to patient safety day in and day out,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “An A Safety Grade is an outstanding achievement, and one that is not possible without a 24/7 effort by the entire health care workforce to protect patients from harm. This community should be proud.”

The A grade from The Leapfrog Group is in addition to other recent recognitions of safety and quality at Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City, including a 2021 100 Top Hospital by Fortune/IBM Watson Health and a 2021 Best Maternity Hospital by Newsweek and The Leapfrog Group.
