Mercy Southeast Completes Sweeping Renovation of Emergency Department

January 21, 2025

A brand new emergency department is caring for patients at Mercy Hospital Southeast. The comprehensive renovation will improve wait times for patients and allow caregivers to provide care more quickly and efficiently.

The $7.9 million project spans the entire emergency department at Mercy Hospital Southeast in Cape Girardeau. It includes 25 exam rooms, two triage rooms and a new waiting room and bathrooms. A new center court, which is a reconfigured caregiver work area to improve workflow, was added as well.

Technological upgrades include a new X-ray machine and the addition of a CT scanner in the department, allowing caregivers to diagnose patients faster and stabilize them more quickly, particularly when a stroke is suspected.

“This renovation dramatically improves our patients’ experience when they have to visit the ER,” said Lori Merritt, director of emergency services. “We have new processes in place and standardized rooms and equipment to see patients quicker and get them home faster to feel better. That standardization really impacts our caregivers too, so they can more effectively care for and focus on each patient.”

A blessing for the new space was held Tuesday, Jan. 21. Father Daniel Belken of the Springfield-Cape Girardeau Diocese provided the blessing. Mercy Southeast leadership and emergency department caregivers were present as well as leaders from the City of Cape Girardeau, the Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce, surrounding ambulance districts, Robinson Construction, who helped complete the renovation, and community members.

“The completion of this renovation means better outcomes for our patients,” said Eric Ammons, Mercy Southeast president and regional president for Mercy’s southeast communities. “That’s key to the kind of excellent patient experience Mercy wants our community to have. The emergency department operates 24/7, and we want to ensure everyone who arrives feels safe, cared for and welcome in keeping with Mercy’s mission of healing.”
