Two advanced practice providers will return home to Southeast Missouri, increasing patient access to surgical care at Mercy Southeast.
Nurse practitioner Sydney VanGennip, originally of Leopold, and physician assistant Addison Caraway, a native of Jackson, recently joined Mercy Clinic General Surgery – Broadway, 1723 S. Broadway, Suite 310, Cape Girardeau, to provide a full range of personalized care before and after procedures. The clinic offers a wide range of surgical services, including biopsies, gallbladder and hernia procedures, skin surgeries, and more.
VanGennip, in health care for 11 years, started her career as a certified medication aide (CMA). She cared for patients as a registered nurse in the neonatal intensive care (NICU) and pediatrics units before becoming a family nurse practitioner in the primary care setting. VanGennip earned an associate degree in nursing from Mercy’s Southeast Missouri Hospital College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Cape Girardeau, going on to earn bachelor’s and master’s degrees in nursing from Chamberlain University in Illinois.
“Mercy mirrors my own commitment to providing high-quality, patient-focused care to our rural communities while making health care accessible and affordable,” VanGennip said. “I’m drawn to surgery because it enables me to make a real difference in my patients’ lives. With empathy and experience, I’m ready to help patients find relief from pain and overcome disease while also growing professionally as part of an exceptional surgical team.”
VanGennip is married to her husband, Darren, and they have three sons and two dogs. She enjoys being outdoors, hunting, watching competitive sports and spending time with family and friends.
Caraway earned her undergraduate degree at the University of Mississippi and her graduate degree in physician assistant studies from Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee. Prior to graduate school, she worked with the surgical team at Mercy Southeast.
“I look forward to developing meaningful relationships with patients while contributing to a collaborative environment that offers compassionate, patient-centered care,” Caraway said. “Having previously worked in surgery, I’ve seen firsthand the impact this work can have. Being able to help patients through some of their most vulnerable moments while also guiding them through the recovery process is a great privilege. I’m genuinely excited to work with this group of surgeons and be a part of Mercy.”
Caraway enjoys spending time with her new husband, family, friends and Cavachon dog. She also likes to cook and loves cheering on her alma mater, Ole Miss.
