Join us in welcoming primary care physician Dr. Jason Li to the Mercy South team. Dr. Li joins Drs. Rose Hiner and Tulika Katyal and nurse practitioners April Durbin and Candace Hudson serving patients with Mercy Clinic Internal Medicine – Crestwood. You can get to know more about Dr. Li in his own words with this Q&A:
Why did you get into health care?
Like a lot of health care professionals, I started off with a general interest in the sciences and the desire to help others. I didn’t always know I wanted to be a doctor, but I found this path is the one that interested me the most.
What really gets me going is being able to personally help people around me who need the help and use my education and skills effectively to help them stay happy, healthy and functional as best as I can. It's a blessing to be able to find this sort of fulfillment through work, and I found that through my pursuit of medicine.
What drew you to specialize in primary care?
I chose primary care because of how it encompasses a mixture of care, some simple and some complex, and often over a patient’s lifetime. It allows me to take the most interest in my patients and to personally contribute to their lives in a fulfilling way. Being able to help the patient in front of me no matter who they are and what concerns they have is the core idea of being a doctor. It also makes life a bit more meaningful to know my patients and their social circumstances over time, bond with them, and from that bond really optimize and personalize care for them.
Why did you choose to join Mercy and specifically Mercy South?
I chose Mercy for its values; its dedication to compassionate care, excellence and justice particularly resonate with me. I chose Mercy South, in particular, for its wonderful and supportive environment. It feels like a place where I can make a meaningful difference for my patients.
What are you looking forward to about living in St. Louis?
I’ve been here for a year now, but I honestly have not had a chance to explore much of the city yet. I’m looking forward to seeing more of the social and hobbyist side of the city and its people. I have had the chance to really enjoy the food and hospitality!
If you know any great restaurants or want to let me know about interesting places for food or family fun, I would love your recommendations!
Do you mind sharing a little about your personal life?
I enjoy spending most of my free time with my family. I really enjoy traveling, watching YouTube, trying out different foods, playing board games and video games, and playing the piano.
