Born at Mercy Southeast and raised in Cape Girardeau, Emily Montgomery was destined to care for patients in her hometown hospital.
The granddaughter and niece of lifelong nurses, Montgomery is now seeing patients at Mercy Clinic Women’s Health – 650 S. Mount Auburn in Cape Girardeau, where she serves as a certified nurse midwife providing prenatal and postpartum care as well as early newborn care. She joins a highly skilled team of obstetricians, gynecologists and midwives providing personalized, compassionate support for women at all stages of their life’s journey. As a midwife, Montgomery will also help women who choose a natural birth to deliver their babies at Mercy Hospital Southeast.
“During nursing school, I quickly realized obstetrics was where I belonged,” Montgomery said. “I couldn't wait to be part of those life-changing moments. For the past decade as a labor and delivery nurse at Mercy Southeast, I've had the privilege of supporting women through some of the most joyful and most difficult days of their lives. I've celebrated first cries, comforted families through heartbreaking loss and witnessed the incredible strength women discover during pregnancy and childbirth. Those experiences inspired me to become a certified nurse midwife. I wanted the opportunity to care for women beyond labor and delivery by building lasting relationships, providing education and partnering with patients throughout every stage of life.”
For Montgomery, becoming a certified nurse midwife will bring new opportunities but in a new setting.
“I'm grateful to continue working alongside the incredible team of physicians, advanced practice providers, nurses and other caregivers who I've had the privilege of knowing throughout my years in labor and delivery. They've become not only trusted colleagues but also friends, and I'm excited to collaborate with them in this new role.”
Montgomery earned a bachelor’s degree in social work with a minor in biology from Saint Louis University. She then graduated from Saint Louis University’s Trudy Busch Valentine School of Nursing accelerated program to earn her bachelor’s degree in nursing, followed by joining the team at Mercy Southeast. Montgomery earned her master’s degree in nurse midwifery from the University of Cincinnati College of Nursing in Cincinnati, Ohio.
“My background in both nursing and social work has shaped my holistic, person-centered approach to care, and I'm excited to continue serving women and families in the community I call home,” Montgomery said. “One of the greatest gifts of practicing in a rural community is the chance to truly know your patients and walk alongside them through multiple seasons of their lives. I'm honored to be a part of that journey.”
Montgomery is married to her high school sweetheart, Michael, and they have three young boys. They also have two dogs and three horses. Outside of work, she enjoys crafting including graphic design, drawing, photography, painting, sewing, embroidery and epoxy. Lately, she’s taken up quilting. Montgomery also enjoys gardening with her sons, traveling as a family, trail riding on their horses, and watching her husband play polo.
