Advancing Digestive Care Through Research

If you’ve ever wondered what happens in a clinical trial, you now have the opportunity to learn first-hand. Clinical trials help Mercy researchers do a number of things to advance our care for digestive diseases, including:

  • Evaluate new medications
  • Test treatment approaches
  • Improve diagnostic tools and technologies

If you’re eligible, you may have the opportunity to participate in a research study at Kathryn Ann Meinders Digestive Health Institute while also receiving hands-on care from an experienced digestive health team.

Our gastroenterologists, advanced practice providers, nurses and study coordinators work to provide care centered around you. Together, they’ll help ensure your participation in research is safe and properly aligned with your ongoing care.

Digestive Health Research Opportunities

Active studies change over time and may be available if you have a digestive health condition such as:

  • Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and other disorders of gut-brain interaction
  • Eosinophilic esophagitis and other esophageal disorders
  • Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and other liver conditions
  • Celiac disease, GERD and other chronic digestive conditions

What Participation May Involve

Every study has its own eligibility requirements and visit schedule. Before you decide to enroll, your research team will explain the study’s purpose, potential benefits and risks, alternatives, required visits and any tests or medications involved.

Your study may require labs, imaging, endoscopy or other study-related testing. You may also be asked to complete symptom questionnaires, health diaries or secure check-ins. We’ll adjust medication or monitor your treatment as needed.

It’s expected that you communicate regularly with your Mercy care team. Please ask questions at any point and know that choosing not to participate won’t affect the care you receive at Mercy. Research is always conducted under carefully monitored protocols designed to protect your safety and privacy.
