Spiritual Care at Mercy Hospital South

Mercy Hospital South supports the spiritual and physical needs of our patients, their families and our staff. We realize that being in a hospital with an illness or injury can be stressful for the patient and their family.

We also understand that providing spiritual care to the patient and their family can play a vital, integral role in their healing process. Our chaplains are available any time to offer spiritual and emotional support by calling 314.467.2825.

Chaplains

Our chaplains are specifically trained to meet the religious and spiritual needs of all patients — no matter their spiritual beliefs or religious identification, whether Christian, Muslim, non-traditional, atheist or something else. Because each person's needs are different, we provide a variety of individualized services. Chaplains are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week to:

  • Actively listen to any concerns you or your family may have
  • Facilitate religious rituals, rites and sacraments
  • Help in time of crisis and offer expertise in trauma response, dementia support, end-of-life decisions, grief support, mental health issues and staff support
  • Discuss ethical concerns
  • Discuss issues such as loss, death, grief, divorce or lifestyle changes
  • Support families during the process of organ and tissue donation
  • Respond to patient and family needs at the Main Hospital, Heart Hospital, Hyland Behavioral Health, Sindelar Cancer Center, the Rehab Hospital and area clinics
  • Offer prayers: morning PA prayers (Monday-Friday), evening PA prayers (daily) and during other special occasions

Chapel

Mercy's chapel, located on the main level, is open 24 hours a day for prayer and meditation. In addition:

  • Catholic Mass is celebrated in the chapel at 11:30 a.m., Monday through Friday, and at 1 p.m. on Sunday
  • Ecumenical worship services are provided upon request
  • Masses and special prayer services are offered on religious and some secular holidays
  • Masses and religious services are televised on channel 73

Sacraments

Holy Communion is distributed to our Catholic patients by volunteer commissioned extraordinary ministers of the Eucharist from neighboring parishes. The Sacraments of Anointing of the Sick and Reconciliation are available upon request. In addition, the spiritual care staff will attempt to provide the sacramental needs of non-Catholic patients by contacting their pastor or minister as requested.
