Personalized Nutrition Support for Digestive Health
Food plays an important role in how every gastrointestinal (GI) condition is managed. But nutrition advice is not one-size-fits-all. At Kathryn Ann Meinders Digestive Health Institute (DHI), our GI dietitian provides personalized nutrition counseling designed around your diagnosis, symptoms, treatment plan and personal goals.
Why Choose Mercy for GI Nutrition Care?
At the DHI, your GI dietitian is a key part of your whole digestive health team. Our philosophy combines nutrition guidance based in the latest research with compassionate, individualized care.
Our GI dietitian works on site, so you’ll see them at the DHI with the rest of your digestive health providers. This means more caregivers working together to better provide you with full treatment options.
We’re here to help you make sense of your situation and work toward a plan that supports your health goals, daily routine and the right nutrition.
Nutrition Care for GI Conditions
Our registered dietitian works closely with your gastroenterology team to help address your nutrition needs related to a number of digestive conditions, including:
- Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis
- Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Celiac disease and gluten-related disorders
- Gastroparesis and other motility disorders
- Liver disease, including metabolic liver disease, also known as fatty liver disease
- Pancreatic disorders and digestive enzyme needs
- Food intolerances and elimination diets
- Nutrient deficiencies and malnutrition
- Nutrition needs related to tube feeding, ostomy care or GI surgery
- IV nutrition or total parental nutrition (TPN) as needed
A Plan Built Around You
It’s important that your nutrition plan fits your body and goals. Successful diet changes are ones you're able to sustain over a long period of time and incorporate seamlessly into your day-to-day lifestyle. During your visit, your GI dietitian may help you:
- Identify foods or eating patterns that make your symptoms worse
- Create a balanced, realistic plan that supports getting symptoms under control
- Maintain adequate calories, protein, vitamins and minerals
- Navigate special diets, including low-FODMAP, gluten-free, low-residue or anti-inflammatory approaches as needed
- Improve fiber intake safely and gradually with a focus on consuming fresh fruits and vegetables and avoiding processed foods
- Manage hydration and electrolyte needs, particularly with diarrhea, ostomies or short bowel concerns
- Support healthy weight management without unnecessary food restrictions
Our goal is to help you focus on better understanding your body. We want to empower you to maintain good nutrition practices and build sustainable habits you can follow with confidence for years to come.
What to Expect at Your Visit
Your first visit will be focused on your health history, symptoms, current eating habits, lifestyle and goals. Your Mercy dietitian will review your GI diagnosis and treatment plan, then work with you to create recommendations that are specific to your needs.
You’ll leave with an understanding of practical next steps, such as meal planning ideas, nutrition strategies, hydration guidance and supplement recommendations as needed. Ongoing visits and follow-ups may be helpful as your symptoms, medications or nutrition needs change. We’re here to help you every step of the way.
