New Nurse Practitioner Gives Back Through Health Care in Watonga

May 2, 2023

Cortney Barrett is a native Oklahoman with a passion for rural health care who recently started seeing patients at Mercy Clinic Primary Care – Watonga.

Barrett was led to pursue a career in nursing due to a personal family experience. “My eldest daughter was born early and had to spend two months in the neonatal intensive care unit,” said Barrett. “I made a career goal to give back to others, just like the physicians and nurses who helped my family during that difficult time.”

In addition to her education, Barrett has over five years of experience working with patients in the intensive care unit and emergency department. These skills prepared her to help patients in Watonga.

“I wanted to work in a rural setting where I could apply my medical experience in a way that gives back to the local community,” she said. “Working in this area of Oklahoma allows me to really get to know my patients and have long-standing relationships with them. It also gives me the chance to work with kids, which I really enjoy.”

Barrett received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Texas at Arlington. She later received a master’s in nursing from Chamberlain University in Addison, Illinois, with an emphasis in family practice.

In her spare time, Barrett enjoys spending time with her four children and husband. She also enjoys reading and exploring the outdoors.
