Mercy Hospital Ada now offers coronary calcium scans to catch heart problems before they become life threatening. This new screening is in addition to the new cardiopulmonary rehabilitation and cardiology clinic opened by Mercy Ada in 2023 to improve heart care in the region.
“Catching heart problems early can mean the difference between life and death,” said Dr. Fionnuala Gurley, Mercy cardiologist. “With the help of these coronary calcium scans, we can catch heart disease earlier and potentially save lives.”
This non-invasive screening scans for calcium buildup in the arteries and heart, which can lead to heart attack. It is recommended for individuals with a family history of cardiac problems, diabetes or elevated cholesterol. Patients can also ask their primary care provider if a scan is a good option for their health.
“We are always looking for ways to expand options for care,” said Scott Tulane, chief operating officer at Mercy Hospital Ada. “This is a test patients previously had to travel for, but they now have access closer to home. We hope that convenience will encourage more people to schedule a screening for themselves or a loved one and prioritize their health.”
The test costs $50 due at the time of appointment, and it is not currently covered by insurance. Employers can also pay for their employees to take the test directly.
“People often underestimate the power of preventive care. Staying on top of annual care visits and following up on personal risk factors through screenings can save you from a life-altering condition further down the road,” Dr. Gurley said.
No referrals are needed for this scan. Patients can schedule an appointment by calling 580-421-1565. The test is performed at Mercy Hospital Ada’s radiology department.
