ARDMORE, Okla. — At least half of men ages 51 and up suffer from an enlarged prostate, and a new procedure available at Mercy Hospital Ardmore helps protect sexual function and continence when surgery is needed to treat it.
Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a common, noncancerous condition causing an enlarged prostate and problems like increased urinary frequency and urgency, and an inability to completely empty the bladder. Half of men ages 51-60 have BPH, with the incidence increasing in later decades of life.
Surgery is often recommended when lifestyle changes and medication are ineffective. The new Aquablation therapy available at Mercy is minimally invasive, avoiding critical structures to preserve sexual function and continence while alleviating BPH’s symptoms.
“For most men, the most important outcome from this procedure is resuming a normal and active lifestyle when it’s over, during what should be some of the best years of their lives,” said Dr. Hayden Henry, a urologist. “Aquablation therapy’s safe and predictable outcomes absolutely make it the best possible procedure when surgery is necessary.”
Aquablation Therapy
Aquablation therapy, using the AquaBeam Robotic System, is the first FDA-cleared, surgical robot that combines real-time, multi-dimensional imaging, automated robotics, and heat-free water-jet ablation for targeted, controlled and immediate removal of prostate tissue.
During the minimally invasive procedure, surgeons combine both cystoscopic visualization and ultrasound imaging to create a personalized treatment plan tailored to each patient’s anatomy. The map then guides the robotic waterjet to remove the prostate tissue.
Numerous clinical studies show Aquablation therapy outcomes are predictable and reproducible regardless of prostate anatomy, prostate size or surgeon experience. The procedure typically takes about an hour, with an overnight hospital stay.
“It’s important to dispel any fears men have because of side effects from traditional surgery and other treatment options,” said Dr. Henry. “The Aquablation procedure protects surrounding tissue and reduces common side effects. Patients resume their normal lives when it’s over, and they also avoid the significant problems that BPH causes if it’s left untreated. It can leave you with irreversible bladder or kidney damage, bladder stones and incontinence.”
The new procedure means men no longer must choose between largely ineffective treatments with minimal side effects or a high degree of symptom relief with a high rate of irreversible complication like incontinence, erectile dysfunction or ejaculatory dysfunction.
