Mercy Southeast Only Provider in the Region to Provide Aquablation Therapy for Treatment of Enlarged Prostate

March 13, 2025

A new procedure for men suffering from enlarged prostates is now available at Mercy Southeast, the first of its kind in the Southeast Missouri region.

Mercy Southeast recently introduced Aquablation therapy for treatment of lower urinary tract symptoms due to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a common, non-cancerous condition which affects half of all men ages 51 to 60. The condition becomes increasingly more common as men age beyond 60. The procedure uses the HYDROS Robotic System, which is the first FDA-cleared surgical robot combining multi-dimensional imaging, automated robotics and heat-free waterjet ablation for targeted, controlled and immediate removal of prostate tissue.

“Men often put off treatment due to the fear of side effects from surgical treatment and medications,” said Dr. Mitch Ogles, a private practice urologist who treats patients at Mercy Southeast. “This new procedure allows men to obtain a very high degree of symptom relief while dramatically lowering the chances of irreversible complications like incontinence and erectile dysfunction.”

BPH causes the prostate gland to enlarge and can lead to problems with urinary urgency, frequency and inability to completely empty the bladder. Surgery is often recommended when lifestyle changes or medications are ineffective. If left untreated, BPH can lead to more serious health problems including kidney and bladder damage, bladder stones and incontinence.

Surgeons combine both ultrasound imaging and cystoscopic visualization of the inside of the urethra and bladder to create a personalized treatment plan for each patient. The plan then guides the robotic waterjet to remove the extra prostate tissue and avoid critical structures. Proven in numerous clinical studies, Aquablation therapy offers predictable and reproducible outcomes, regardless of prostate anatomy, prostate size or surgeon experience.
