WASHINGTON, Mo. - Ten Mercy hospitals have earned the highest rating, an A grade, for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit watchdog. Mercy Hospital Washington was among the top 32% of hospitals nationwide and one of only four in Missouri to earn this distinction.
This marks the fourth straight A for Mercy Washington.
“Earning an ‘A’ Grade from The Leapfrog Group is something our entire community can be proud of,” said Marie Moore, Mercy Washington Communities president. “This honor reflects the daily commitment of every person in our hospital – from housekeeping, pharmacy, support services to those at the bedside. It takes every one of us working together to create a safe, healing environment for our patients. I’m deeply grateful for the teamwork and heart our caregivers bring each day.”

Leapfrog rates hospitals on an A-F grading scale after reviewing more than 30 measures of errors, accidents, injuries and infections as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring. Johns Hopkins Medicine researchers estimate that more than 50,000 lives could be saved if all hospitals operated as well as an A hospital.
“Achieving an A Hospital Safety Grade reflects enormous dedication to patient safety,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “I extend my congratulations to Mercy, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for creating a culture where patients come first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Eight additional Mercy hospitals have earned the highest rating including Ada (OK), Ardmore (OK), Jefferson (MO), Lebanon (MO), Oklahoma City (OK), Pittsburg (KS) and Springfield (MO).
