Mercy and Wellvana Launch Major Initiative to Bring Independent Physicians into Value-Based Care

To help bring high-quality, affordable care to more patients, Mercy is extending value-based care to independent physicians and advanced practice providers throughout the communities Mercy serves. A new 20-year affiliation with Wellvana will equip those independent practices with the support and tools they need to thrive in value-based models.

Dave Thompson, Mercy's senior vice president, chief growth officer and president of population health, explained to the St. Louis Business Journal how working with Wellvana can benefit the entire community.

“‘A lot of independent practitioners aren't able to negotiate fair and reasonable rate structures. And most of the payers won't offer value-based models of care to independent practitioners, because of the complexity and the resources that are needed to perform in those models,’ he said. But it’s important that providers, from large systems to small practices, invest in those capabilities to improve the overall health status of the communities they serve, he said.”
