ST. LOUIS - Mercy's Stephanie Clements, senior vice president and chief nurse executive, penned an article in Catholic Health Association's Spring 2026 Health Progress publication showcasing how Mercy is transforming the nursing experience.
In the article, she said in her earliest days as a nurse she learned care was more than clinical expertise - it's presence, compassion and empathy. She shared personal experiences that help guide her leadership and caregiving to this day.
She said, "Over time, I realized that providing accompaniment is as critical as having technical skills. When we explain, reassure and invite questions, we transform fear into trust. The discipline of technical excellence paired with human presence continues to shape how I lead teams and design care models."
The article dives into Mercy's focus on nursing in a variety of areas, including recruitment, work-life balance, technology and listening. She said if she could give her younger self one piece of advice, it would be to seek mentors and embrace lifelong learning.
