Breast Imaging

Have you found a lump or other change in your breast? Or are you due for an exam? In either case, diagnostic imaging is a fast and accurate way to determine if there is a problem such as breast cancer.

At Mercy, our specialists use the latest imaging technology to detect and evaluate breast cancer. The types of breast imaging tests may include:

  • Mammogram: An X-ray of the breast.
  • 3D Mammography: Also known as digital breast tomosynthesis (say "toh-moh-SIN-thuh-suss") uses X-rays to create a three-dimensional image of the breast. It may be used along with a digital mammogram or by itself.
  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Use of a magnet field, radio waves and dye to create a picture of the interior of the breast.
  • Ultrasound: Using sound waves to show a lump in breast tissue.
  • Ductogram: A special type of imaging that focuses on the breast ducts.

A Mercy physician will recommend the best procedure for your situation, and then make sure you understand the test results. And along the way you’ll get all the compassionate support you need.
