ADA, Okla. — The dance moves were flowing and fellowship was in the air Thursday at the Pontotoc Technology Center, with about 100 caregivers from Mercy Hospital Ada and friends in the community teaming up for a “Feed the Funnel” party to pack 40,000 meal kits for local people who are food-insecure.
This kind of event is the perfect expression for how we feel about our work at the hospital — we love our community, we love our work and we have fun doing it,” said Kaycee Young, Mercy vice president of mission. “We do serious work, but we do it in a joyful way that brings us closer together.”
Joining the Mercy caregivers were students, staff and volunteers from Ada High School, Byng High School, Latta High School, East Central University, the state Health Department and local Rotary clubs.
The 40,000 healthy, shelf-stable meal kits are based on beans and rice with flavor packs. All that’s needed is boiling water and a little bit of butter or margarine for a quick, filling and nutritious home-cooked meal.
The kits will be distributed to food-insecure people from Ada, Holdenville, Milburn, Tishomingo and the surrounding area. Distribution sites include Abba’s Tables, Asbury United Methodist Church, Covenant Church, Mama T’s, Mercy Hospital Ada and St. Luke’s Episcopal Church.
“Feed the Funnel” parties are organized by The Pack Shack, an Arkansas-based nonprofit. Volunteer groups donate money to buy beans, rice and other ingredients in bulk, then a group of at least five people gets together to pack the meals.
High-energy pop anthems pulsed from the speakers during Mercy’s event in Ada, with hairnet-clad volunteers dancing to the beat while they filled the kits and packed them up.
