Mercy is again demonstrating its commitment to safe, high-quality care with three of its St. Louis region hospitals earning A grades for hospital safety from The Leapfrog Group, a national nonprofit watchdog committed to health care transparency. Mercy Hospital Jefferson, Mercy Hospital South and Mercy Hospital Washington each earned an A for fall 2024.
Mercy South maintained its straight A status with its seventh consecutive A dating back to 2021. Mercy Washington earned its third straight A, and Mercy Jefferson earned its 13th A in the last 16 grading periods.
“Whether a hospital is achieving an A grade or maintaining an A grade year after year, we know it takes a commitment to safety from every one of our co-workers day after day,” said Kat Nelson, Mercy chief quality officer. “We strive for these A grades not for the recognition for ourselves, but so our patients can be assured they are receiving the high-quality care they expect from us.”
Nationwide, only 30% of hospitals achieved an A grade from Leapfrog this fall. In Missouri, Mercy hospitals in Lebanon and Springfield also earned A grades, giving Mercy five of the 12 total A grades in the state. Other Mercy hospitals to earn A grades are Mercy Hospital Ada (Oklahoma), Mercy Hospital Fort Smith (Arkansas), Mercy Hospital Oklahoma City and Mercy Hospital Northwest Arkansas.
Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, added, “Achieving an A hospital safety grade is a significant accomplishment. It reflects enormous dedication to patients and their families, and the whole community should be proud. I extend my congratulations to Mercy, its leadership, clinicians, staff and volunteers for their tireless efforts to put patients first.”
The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the nation’s only rating system focused exclusively on preventing medical errors, infections and injuries that lead to more than 500 patient deaths each day. Leapfrog assigns letter grades (A to F) to hospitals across the country based on more than 30 performance measures reflecting errors, accidents, injuries and infections, as well as the systems hospitals have in place to prevent them. The program is peer reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
