The Arkansas Department of Health (ADH) recently recognized 40 hospitals (including Mercy), 45 ambulance services, one regional team and four individuals for excellence in stroke patient care.
The hospital awards are based on stroke care performance as documented in the Arkansas Stroke Registry for July 2023 and June 2024 patient discharges. Hospital awards are provided for Coverdell Defect-Free Stroke Care, documentation of stroke bands, and door-to-CT times.
The three award classes are based on the level of adherence including:
• Diamond: 95%+
• Ruby: 90%-94.99%
• Pearl: 85%-89.99%
Mercy locations that have been recognized are:
• Mercy Fort Smith, Diamond Award for stroke band documentation; Pearl Award for defect-free care.
• Mercy Northwest Arkansas, Pearl Award for defect-free care; Pearl Award for door-to-CT times.
• Mercy Emergency Department - Springdale, Diamond Award for defect-free care.
• Mercy Hospital Paris, Pearl Award for defect-free care; Ruby Award for door-to-CT times.
• Mercy Emergency Department – Bella Vista, Ruby Award for defect-free care; Ruby Award for door-to-CT times.
• Mercy Hospital Booneville, Pearl Award for defect-free care.
• Mercy Hospital Ozark, Pearl Award for defect-free care.

Defect-free care is an aggregated metric based on the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association (AHA/ASA) Coverdell metrics to ensure stroke patients receive appropriate care. Stroke bands allow for improved data collection for quality improvement and faster door to CT times improve the likelihood of better patient outcomes. To qualify for this award, a hospital must be designated through ADH or a national accreditation body.
“We commend our Arkansas health care providers for their dedication to excellence to stroke patient care and patient outcomes,” said Bala Simon, MD, DrPH, Deputy Chief Medical Officer and State Chronic Disease Director at Arkansas Department of Health.
