WASHINGTON, Mo. - Mercy is kicking off its fundraising campaign for a surgical robot with a dual-purpose blood drive at Straatmann Toyota, Highway 100, on June 25.
Bill Straatmann, a long-time blood, platelet and plasma donor who hosts regular Mercy blood drives at his car dealership, had a unique idea to benefit two Mercy programs at one time – he pledged $100 for each presenting blood donor. The funds will go toward the purchase of the da Vinci 5 Surgical System, which would mark the first time robotic surgery would be available in Washington.

“I’m excited to have an opportunity to save lives through blood donations and help bring innovation to the community,” Straatmann said.
Straatmann’s blood drive is the first community fundraising event focused on the da Vinci, which is also the fundraising goal of a benefit gala this fall. The annual Mercy Health Foundation Gala is set for Oct. 17, 2025, at Triple 3 Vineyard.
Straatmann and his wife, Dee, have been long time supporters of Mercy Washington, its foundation and services. Dee is a hospice volunteer and member of both Women with a Mission and the Mercy Auxiliary.
