“We are incredibly blessed that these talented clinicians and surgeons chose to bring their expertise and passion to our Mercy patients,” said Eric Ammons, regional president of Mercy Southeast Missouri Communities. “This is a monumental step in fulfilling our promise to provide high-quality health care at a lower cost to patients in this area.”

The surgeons and nurse practitioner are now seeing patients at the new Mercy Clinic General Surgery – Broadway, located inside the Mercy Medical Plaza at 1723 S. Broadway St., Suite 310, in Cape Girardeau. In addition to caring for patients in Cape Girardeau, they will also provide surgical treatment and care for patients at Mercy Perry in Perryville, Missouri, and Mercy Stoddard in Dexter, Missouri.

Dr. Major Burger

Dr. Burger graduated from Saint Louis University and completed medical school at A.T. Still University – Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in Kirksville, Missouri. He completed his residency at OhioHealth Doctors Hospital in Columbus, Ohio.

Dr. Burger is from Southeast Missouri, where he grew up in New Hamburg, Missouri.

“Being raised in this community and practicing here for the last eight years, I’ve developed a profound respect and admiration for its people,” Dr. Burger said. “Mercy distinguishes itself with an extensive range of care, opportunities and resources that align well with my own model of patient care and values. It gives me a deep sense of purpose to contribute meaningfully to this mission and enhance the well-being of our community.”

Dr. Burger is married to his wife, Monica, who is a registered nurse at an elementary school. They have two young daughters. Outside of caring for patients, Dr. Burger enjoys hunting, fishing, golfing, boating, traveling and coaching his children in softball and basketball.

Dr. Carson Cunningham

Dr. Cunningham earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from Louisiana State University and a Doctor of Medicine from Louisiana State University School of Medicine. He later completed a general surgery residency and laparoscopic fellowship at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center Shreveport.

A Louisiana native, Dr. Cunningham enjoys spending time with his family and friends, playing pickleball, doing group activities at church and cheering on the LSU Tigers. He has a 16-year-old daughter and three miniature schnauzers.

Dr. Joseph McCadams

Dr. McCadams graduated from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. He then completed medical school at the Mercer University School of Medicine in Macon, Georgia, and completed his residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Dr. McCadams is originally from Cordele, Georgia, and moved to Jackson, Missouri, after his medical training to be closer to his wife’s family. He has practiced in this community for the past 23 years and considers this area to be his home, having lived here longer than anywhere else in his life.

“I’m looking forward to working alongside all the Mercy team members from the operating room to the nursing staff to help improve surgical care and access in this community,” Dr. McCadams said. “The people here place an emphasis on family and have traditional values. It’s what I like most about this area.”

Dr. McCadams and his wife have three children – a set of twin daughters and a son, who are currently studying at Southeast Missouri State University and the University of Missouri. In his free time, he enjoys hunting, fishing and cheering on the Georgia Bulldogs.
