Neurologist Marshall Kirsch, D.O., has joined the Mercy Jefferson team. Dr. Kirsch joins Tariq Alam, M.D., serving patients with Mercy Neurology – Jefferson Suite N2400. Get to know Dr. Kirsch in his own words with this Q&A.
Why did you get into health care?
I got into health care because I’ve always been driven by a desire to solve complex problems and make a tangible difference in people’s lives.
Did you always know you wanted to be a neurologist? What drew you to this specialty?
I didn’t always know neurology was my path. In medical school, I was drawn to nearly every specialty! But during my rotations, I found myself captivated by neurology – the final frontier of medicine. Every neurological case feels like a mystery to unravel. I love the intellectual challenge of localizing a lesion based on a patient’s history and exam findings.
What should patients know about you?
I’m deeply curious and always learning. Whether it’s staying up to date on clinical trials or diving into a new hobby, I love challenging myself to grow. I’m also passionate about patient education. Helping patients understand their condition and feel empowered in their care is a big part of why I do this. You can expect me to be collaborative, thorough and always ready to discuss neurology-related topics!
Are there any specific conditions, procedures or treatments that most interest you?
I recently completed a fellowship in epilepsy. I am especially interested in that sub-specialty field of neurology. Additionally, I am interested in headache management, vascular neurology and stroke, acute care neurology and functional neurological disorders.
Why did you choose to join Mercy and specifically Mercy Jefferson?
I truly feel that there is a sense of family here at Mercy and particularly at Mercy Jefferson. From the moment I stepped foot into the hospital, I’ve felt everyone is on the same page working to help patients achieve their medical goals. Being part of a system that emphasizes both innovation and community impact felt like the right fit for me.
What are you looking forward to about living here?
I’m relatively new to the area, having moved here for the opportunity to serve at Mercy Jefferson. This region is a fantastic blend of urban energy and suburban charm. I’ve heard about the wonderful, family-friendly activities in the area. Everything from the zoo to the Gateway Arch seems like a new opportunity to explore! I’m also looking forward to enjoying outdoor activities such as biking, hiking and jogging.
