Mercy caregivers debuted a new linear accelerator (LINAC) at Mercy Cancer Center – Ada, celebrating the arrival of cutting-edge radiation therapy with a ribbon cutting and blessing. The LINAC aims radiation at tumors with pinpoint accuracy, sparing nearby healthy tissue.

“Having the latest technology for cancer care close to home helps more than just cancer patients in Ada – it helps their entire family and support team,” said Julie Baker, Mercy's lead radiation therapist. “The LINAC in our cancer center means our neighbors don’t have to rearrange their lives around treatment in another city. They can get excellent care right here in Ada and have more time to focus on their recovery journey.”

About LINACs

LINACs deliver external beam radiation like image-guided radiation therapyintensity-modulated radiation therapy and stereotactic radiosurgery

They help Mercy cancer specialists treat cancers of the brain, spine, head and neck, lung, breast, esophagus, stomach, rectum, uterus, prostate, bladder, liver and bones.

The machine sends radiation like X-rays or electron beams through the body and into cancer tumors. Equipped with 3D image guidance including CT scanning to accurately target tumors, special software then matches radiation beams to unique tumor sizes and shapes. The customized approach makes external beam radiation therapy safe and precise for cancer treatment.
