The school of nursing also began.
    • 1957 – A new addition was added, doubling the bed capacity of the hospital to around 153 beds and included five operating rooms; orthopedic and urological operating rooms; a new obstetrics department and additional beds for medical-surgical patients and pediatrics.
    • 1979 – The hospital established downstate Missouri’s first Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).
